Steve Braver
Steve Braver, a 1968 Penn State journalism graduate, began his career
as a part-time salesperson for the Centre Daily Times in
State College, Pa., and rose to general manager. He held general
manager positions at Gary, Ind., and Portland, Maine, prior to become
publisher of the Altoona (Pa.) Mirror and group
publisher for Pennsylvania. He became regional general manager of
Tahoe Carson Area Newspapers and group publisher for Greater Niagara
Newspapers, Niagara Falls, N.Y. He has been a featured speaker at
newspaper industry meetings and has also taught in Penn State’s
College of Business Administration and College of Communications.
Braver and his wife, Brandy, have a daughter and two sons. He likes
relaxing with a good book and claims to having been a respectable
golfer at one time.
Kerrie Aman Carfagno
For more of Kerrie Carfagno's opinions about the telecom industry
you can pay by the credit or by the hour. She teaches Comm 487 (Telecom
Management) as an adjunct professor for Penn State and co-founded
Powernoggin, a telecom consulting company. She has a Penn State-issued
B.A. in telecommunications and an executive M.B.A. in Technology
Management from NJIT. Carfagno was a senior national account manager
and has worked with data, phone, Internet and cable.
Gabrielle DeRose
Gabrielle DeRose graduated from Penn State in 1988 with a degree
in broadcast journalism and a minor in psychology. She's been an
anchor, reporter and producer at several CBS, FOX and ABC affiliates.
She most recently served as anchor/reporter at KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh,
and main anchor at WTAJ-TV in Altoona, Pa. She’s received
nume rous honors and awards, including an Emmy Award and several
honors from the Associated Press and Pennsylvania Association of
Broadcasters. She keeps her ties to the Penn State community by
serving on the College of Communications Alumni Society board of
directors.
Kristen Fortney
Kristen Fortney has served as the director of alumni relations in
the College of Communications at Penn State for six years. In this
capacity, she is responsible for all activities of a base of more
than 2,000 alumni volunteers, the College's Alumni Society board
of directors, alumni student programming, career programs and events,
alumni volunteer management, alumni interest groups, alumni recognition
and grassroots outreach programs in cities nationwide.
Charles T. Glazer
A 1973 Penn State graduate in journalism, Charles T. Glazer is Manager,
Communications and Public Relations, for International Steel Group
in Richfield, Ohio. In his senior-level executive position
with North Americaís largest steelmaker, Glazer manages and
supports all internal and external communications, and directs financial,
crisis management, media, community and government relations. He
managed communications for the $17-billion merger that created the
worldís largest steel company ($30 billion sales, 165,000
employees). Glazer has more than 25 years experience in public relations,
government affairs, employee communications, crisis management and
marketing communications in the corporate and non-profit sectors,
as well as in agencies..
Jay Grossman
Jay Grossman is principal of The Grossman Group, a strategic communications
consultancy. Previously, he was staff VP-corporate PR for Unisys
Corp. He spent most of his career with Bell Atlantic Corp. (now
Verizon), including assignments as executive director-reputation
management, executive director-corporate communications, director-corporate
media relations and director-employee communications. Grossman planned
communications for Bell Atlantic’s merger with NYNEX and directed
media relations for Bell Atlantic's proposed merger with TCI. He
directed media relations for research consortium Bellcore and was
on the team that announced the break-up of AT&T. Grossman is
a Brooklyn native and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism
from Penn State and an M.S. in communications from NYU. He and his
wife, Dorothy Daub, live in Philadelphia.
Jayne Jamison
A 1978 advertising graduate of Penn State, Jayne Jamison is publisher
of Heart’s Redbook and Victoria magazines. She was also group
publisher of the parenthood group at Gruner & Jahr USA Publishing,
overseeing Parents, Child and five pre- and post-natal magazines.
Prior to that, she served as advertising director of American Health,
published by the Readers Digest Association, and within two years
was named publisher. Jamison worked at the New York Times women's
magazine group for six years, serving as advertising director of
Child, New York manager of McCalls, and beauty/fashion manager of
Family Circle. Jamison began her career at Elkman Advertising in
Philadelphia.
Tim King
A Pittsburgh native and resident, Tim King earned his bachelor’s
degree in speech communications from Penn State in 1981. He is the
assistant director of operations for Metro Networks in Pittsburgh.
He was president of the Allegheny County Penn State Alumni Chapter
from 1992-94. King appears in the 1996-97 edition of the Marquis
"Who's Who in the East" and the 1997 edition of “Who’s
Who in Communications.” He was a participant in the journalist-in-space
project in 1985-86.
Reenie Kuhlman
Reenie Kuhlman (formerly Gottschalk) serves as the manager of communications
for Discovery Networks, U.S., headquartered in Silver Spring, Md.
She manages the trade and business communications for all Discovery
Networks, including the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Travel
Channel and the Discovery Health Channel. In this role, she works
with the networks’ programming, research, marketing and affiliate
sales departments. Prior to joining Discovery, Kuhlman was an account
executive at Arnold Communications in McLean, Va., where she worked
on several key advertising (PNC Bank, SAP America) and public relations
accounts (DeWALT Industrial Tools, The Society of the Plastics Industry,
Inc.). Kuhlman is a 1997 graduate of the College of Communications,
with a bachelor of arts in Media Studies.
Dick Mallary
Mallary is a senior vice president, Gannett Co. Inc. He is a 1960
graduate of Lincoln High School, Ellwood City, Pa., and has B.A.
(1964) and M.A. (1971) degrees in journalism from Penn State. He
is a member of Gannett’s four-person broadcast operating committee
that oversees the direction of the company’s 22 television
stations, with day-to-day management responsibility for five stations
as well as corporate oversight of the division’s news, marketing
and research activities. Prior to Gannett, Mallary was corporate
news director of Cox Broadcasting, Atlanta, Ga.; news director of
WSB-TV, Atlanta, and KUSA-TV, Denver, Colo.; and news consultant
with Frank N. Magid & Associates, Marion, Iowa, and Audience
Research & Development, Dallas, Texas. He and his wife, Vicki,
a graduate of Kiski High School, Vandergrift, Pa., live in Potomac,
Md.
Michele Marchetti
Michelle Marchetti is a freelance writer in New York. She has written
for The Philadelphia Inquirer, Seventeen, SmartMoney, and Slam.
She graduated from Penn State in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree
in journalism.
Bob Martin
Bob Martin is the director of career placement and internships for
Penn State's College of Communications. He graduated with a degree
in broadcast journalism from Penn State in 1987 and has made State
College his home for the last 13 years. He began his broadcasting
career in non-commercial radio in the Philadelphia suburbs in 1988.
He then took an on-air position in commercial radio with WQWK 97.1
FM in State College, Pa. He moved into the sales and marketing arena
for WRSC and WQWK, and was promoted to the local sales manager position
in 1992. In 1994, he was promoted to general sales manager for WRSC/WBLF
and WQWK, In 1997, he was named general manager for Citadel Broadcasting
of State College and managed 40+ employees for the following stations:
WRSC/WBLF, WQWK, WIKN and WRSC News Channel 54. Martin began his
career with Penn State in 1998 as an adjunct professor teaching
the broadcast management course while general manager of the above
listed stations. In mid-1999, he left radio to become the full-time
director of career placement and internships for the College of
Communications. In that position, he has helped thousands of students
obtain relevant experience in the field of communications through
internships and has also assisted soon-to-be graduates as well as
recent graduates develop strategic job search strategies utilizing
a variety of leads and resources.
Linda C. Murphy
Linda C. Murphy, a 1969 Penn State journalism graduate, is director,
corporate communications for PPG Industries. She joined PPG in 1976
and has held a series of advertising and communications management
positions, including director, business communications; manager,
corporate advertising; senior advertising supervisor-chemicals group,
and senior public relations writer. Before joining PPG, she was
a senior account executive at Burson-Marsteller. A native of Pittsburgh
and resident of Allison Park, Murphy is active in professional organizations,
having served on the board of directors and as president of both
the Pittsburgh Advertising Federation, and the Business Marketing
Association (BMA). She was previously honored as Advertising Executive
of the Year by the Pittsburgh chapter of the BMA, and also served
on the international board of directors of that organization as
regional vice president. Murphy recently completed a 12-year term
on the board of directors of Penn State College of Communications
Alumni Society, where she held several offices, including president.
She served for 10 years and is immediate past chairman of the communications
board of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh.
Claudia Padilla
A current Penn State student and native of Carlisle, Claudia Padilla
is a print journalism major with a minor in English. She is a member
of the literary staff for La Vie, the Penn State yearbook. She will
graduate in spring 2004. Padilla’s possible future plans include
attending graduate school for further journalism studies or working
at a publishing company.
Mike Poorman
A 1982 graduate of Penn State with a dual degree in journalism and
political science, Mike Poorman is senior vice president of The
Barash Group in State College, Pa. He has worked in newspapers as
a sportswriter, associate sports editor, news copy editor and lifestyle
editor. He was the first editor of Blue-White Illustrated, the founding
editor of the Penn State Football Annual (celebrating its 20th season
in 2003), and was sports editor of The Daily Collegian
when it was named the nation’s No. 1 student newspaper in
1981. He was previously director of communications products for
the Center of Corporate Health, a Travelers Company. He is on the
board of directors for the College of Communications Alumni Society,
the Mt. Nittany Conservancy and the Central Pennsylvania Festival
of the Arts. He is also an adjunct professor in the College of Communications.
Poorman resides in State College with his wife, Kate Delano (M.S.,
PSU ‘85), twin sons Alex and Kyle, and daughter Tete.
John Rice
A Pittsburgh native, Rice is a 1977 film/TV graduate of Penn State
currently working as director and director of photography in film
and television. Commercials directed by Rice have been recognized
with Clio, Mobius, Art Director's Club, Addy and Mercury awards.
His feature films as DP include “The Journey” (winner,
Audience Award 1997 Florida Film Festival), “No Pets”
(1995 London Film Festival) and “Struggles in Steel”
(1996 Sundance Festival, Silver Baton 1999 DuPont Journalism Awards).
Jerry Schwartz
Jerry Schwartz, a 1977 Penn State graduate in journalism, has worked
for The Associated Press as a reporter and editor since his graduation
from Penn State, and is now a national writer. A former editor of
The Daily Collegian, he is the author of “The Associated
Press Reporting Handbook."
Virginia L. Sirocky
Virginia L. Sirocky, a 1967 graduate of Penn State in journalism,
is an independent sales and marketing consultant. She specializes
in the development of strategic and tactical plans for a broad variety
of manufacturing, service and educational industries. In addition,
she also serves as a consulting partner for, and a collaborator
with, a number of international consulting firms. As part of her
service, she assists in and advises clients on all aspects of the
marketing function, including strategic planning, market research,
advertising, sales promotion and account targeting as well as sales
force and department organization. Her clients are located worldwide.
Darryl Trent
Darryl Trent is the founder of Trent Communications - A Communications
and Marketing Consultancy. He is currently engaged in development
of a "New Interactive Media Service targeted to Captive Markets."
Trent's professional achievements include broadcast general management,
sales management, marketing and promotional leadership. An innovative
thinker, his career represents outstanding track records in start-up,
private entrepreneurial and corporate environments. He retains a
bachelor’s degree from Penn State and a masters from the University
of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communications.
