Tony Barbieri

Bachelor's degree: George Washington University

Anthony Barbieri serves as the Foster Professor of Writing and Editing. In that role he teaches advanced reporting, journalism ethics and helps coordinate the Foster Conference of Distinguished Writers.

Prior to joining the Penn State faculty, Barbieri spent two years at the University of Maryland and was at The Baltimore Sun for 34 years. He spent the final four years of his tenure with the paper as the managing editor.

In addition to his editing work, Barbieri also worked as the correspondent to Moscow and Tokyo for eight years from home bases in both cities. He was also a Washington correspondent from 1977-1979 covering Congress and U.S. politics.

Barbieri was a member of Associated Press Managing Editors Board of Directors as is a current member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. He received his bachelor’s degree from George Washington University in 1970.
