Advising: General Education Requirements  

Degree requirements are divided into four categories:

  • General Education
  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Major
  • Electives

    Passing grades (D or higher) will satisfy General Education, Bachelor of Arts, and elective requirements.

    Grades of C or higher are required in every course used to satisfy a major requirement. Grades of C or higher is also required in every course used to satisfy a minor requirement.

    Students are required to complete at least one writing intensive course (designated by a W suffix).

    Students planning to graduate with any of the five Communications majors may not count any communication general education course as one of their gen ed requirements. These courses include
  • COMM 100 - GS
  • COMM 150 - GA
  • COMM 250 - GA


    General Education Requirements
    For baccalaureate degree candidates admitted as freshmen or advanced standing from summer session 1994 to spring session 1999, general education requirements of 46 credits are as follows:
  • Skills (15 credits): Writing/speaking 9 (GWS), Quantification 6 (GQ).
  • Health sciences and physical education (4 credits): Health sciences 1 (GHS), Physical education 3 (GPE).
  • Distribution courses (27 credits): Natural sciences 9 (GN), Arts 6 (GA), Humanities 6 (GH), Social and behavioral sciences 6 (GS).


    For baccalaureate degree candidates admitted as first-year or advanced standing after summer 1999, general education requirements of 45 credis as follows:
  • Skills (15 credits): Writing/speaking 9 (GWS), Quantification 6 (GQ).
  • Knowledge domains (30 credits): Health and physical activity 3 (GHA), Natural sciences 9 (GN), Arts 6 (GA), Humanities 6 (GH), Social and behavioral sciences 6 (GS).
